THE PEACE PROJECTS

My feelings about PEACE have deep personal roots but their manifestations are very public.

In August of 1997, as our daughter Deena prepared for her first deployment to the Persian Gulf, I dreamed the Pieced Paper PEACE Quilt and
a year later, I proposed it to Cyberscribes, an on-line guild of calligraphers, graphic artists and great people.

The concept evolved from the PEACE Piece a velvet appliquéd and embroidered wallhanging created by Adina Gatt of Efod Art Embroidery in Israel.

The Cyberscribes based Pieced Paper PEACE quilt includes the work of three dozen people.

It was almost two years from dream to completion.
The Pieced Paper PEACE Quilt made its debut at Writing Beyond Words, the International Calligraphers Conference, in the summer of 1999.

PEACE II: The Book went a step further including about two dozen pieces, charms and amulets and was completed for Days of the Handmade Book in SouthBend, Indiana, in the spring of 2000.

PEACE III: PRAYER Came together as as our daughter returned after six more months in the Persian Gulf area.

It was first shown at 2001: A Calligraphic Odyssey, the 21st International Gathering of Lettering artists;
and continues with an on-going audience participation phase that we hope you will chose to become part of.

It will include a new PEACE Piece by Adina Gatt, PEACE in a multitude of lettering styles, and pieces from amateurs, professionals and a group of third graders from Oregon.

There are portable-mini versions of each of these projects to share the ideas, hopes, and prayers with many and to satisfy the declaration:
If we get tired of waiting for PEACE we can bring it with us.

I wish you PEACE and love.
